OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) — A 44-year-old man provided a false name to Franklin-based State Police following a DUI-related traffic stop in Oil City.

According to court documents, PSP Franklin filed criminal charges against 44-year-old Evan C. Gibson, of Somerset, in Magisterial District Judge Andrew F. Fish’s office on November 21.

The charges stem from a traffic stop in July on West 3rd Street, in Oil City, Venango County.

According to a criminal complaint, troopers observed a white sedan make an improper stop at a red light, and then at a stop sign near the Veterans Bridge in Oil City.

Troopers continued to follow the sedan and observed another stopping violation before a traffic stop was initiated. Upon making contact with the operator, a trooper asked him for his driver’s license, insurance, and registration. The driver related he did not have his ID on him, but it was at his house on Allegheny Avenue.

The driver provided the name of John Gibson and the date of birth of October 16, 1980.

Speaking with the operator, the trooper “recognized his face,” but could not remember his first name. The trooper was “somewhat certain the name was incorrect,” according to the complaint.

Upon running the name of John Gibson, and also pulling up a photo of the associated driver’s license, the trooper reaffirmed the driver gave him a false name–being that of his brother, the complaint indicates.

Police were eventually able to determine the operator’s identity of Evan Gibson, the complaint notes.

A search incident to arrest yielded marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Troopers also determined that Gibson was driving under the influence of a controlled substance, the complaint states.

The following charges were filed against Evan Gibson:

– Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol/Controlled Substance, Misdemeanor (two counts)
– Marijuana — Small Amount Personal Use, Misdemeanor
– False Identification to Law Enforcement Officer, Misdemeanor 3
– Driving While BAC .02 or Greater While License Suspended, Summary
– Intersections Controlled by Signs, Summary
– Obedience to Traffic Control Devices, Summary
– Failure to Stop at Red Light, Summary

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on January 18 in Venango County Central Court with Judge Fish presiding.
