Oil City Man Allegedly Kicks Cop, Nurses at UPMC; Threatens to Kill Doctor

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (EYT) – An Oil City man was arraigned on August 5 for allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill multiple individuals at UPMC Northwest in Cranberry Township, Venango County.

According to a criminal complaint, on August 4, 31-year-old Joshua Andrew Scheffer, of Oil City, was transported to UPMC Northwest for treatment of lacerations to his hand. An Oil City Police Department officer assisted due to the fact that Scheffer was allegedly being uncooperative.

The criminal complaint states that upon arrival at the hospital, Scheffer’s combative behavior continued, and Trooper Todd Bingman and Trooper Tate Allison were dispatched to the hospital. Around 6:10 a.m. on August 4, Scheffer allegedly kicked Trooper Bingman in the upper thigh.

According to the criminal complaint, during the altercation, the following incidents allegedly occurred:

– Scheffer kicked a male registered nurse at the hospital; attempted to kick a female registered nurse in the head; and hit another female registered nurse in the knee with his hand.

– He spit on the staff along with Trooper Allison and Officer Karns of the Oil City PD.

– He used obscene language and continued his combative behavior despite multiple warnings by officers to desist while other people were in the ER receiving treatment.

– He threatened to kill the attending doctor, Trooper Bingman, Trooper Allison, and multiple staff members in the hospital.

– He told Trooper Allison that he was going to “cut a slit in his face and **** his face” and that he was going to shoot him with one shot.

– He threatened to harm the grandchildren of one of the registered nurses who personally knows him.

– He threw bloody towels at the attending doctor and a female registered nurse.

A warrant of arrest was issued for Scheffer, and he faces the following charges:

– 1 count of Aggravated Assault, Felony 2
– 3 counts of Terroristic Threats W/ Int To Terrorize Another, Misdemeanor 1
– 4 counts of Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
– 1 count of Disorderly Conduct Engage In Fighting, Misdemeanor 3

Unable to post $25,000.00 bail, he was committed to the Venango County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on August 13 in front of Magisterial District Judge Douglas I. Dinberg.
