Thanks to Noah Petro’s 76-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and another strong defensive effort, that is exactly what the unbeaten Oilers are doing.

Oil City advanced to the opening round of the PIAA playoffs with a 9-7 win over Hollidaysburg at St. Francis University’s DeGol Field in a District 6-10 Class 5A subregional matchup.

The win improves Oil City to 12-0, a school record for wins, and puts the Oilers in the final 16 in the state for just the second time in school history and the first time since reaching this point in 1998 when they lost to Perry in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A tournament. It also avenges a loss to Hollidaysburg in the same round a year ago.

Oil City will take on District 11 champion Southern Lehigh, who beat East Stroudsburg South, 52-35, Friday night, in the PIAA playoffs next week at a site, day and time to be announced.

The Oilers trailed 7-3 at halftime after taking an early 3-0 lead on a short Max Latona field goal that was set up with a 49-yard Holden Stahl to JT Stahlman pass.

Hollidaysburg took the lead on a 1-yard Trenton Paddock touchdown run late in the first quarter on a drive that was kept alive by an offsides penalty on Oil City on a fourth-down play that gave the Tigers a first down.

The Tigers looked to add to their lead early in the second half but missed a field goal, and Oil City took the lead for good when Petro broke his 76-yard run to give Oil City the lead, 9-7.

Hollidaysburg tried to answer back and reached the Oil City 19-yard line late in the third quarter before the Oilers defense came up with a stop.

The Oilers defense continued to do the job stopping the Tigers on downs with around four minutes to play near midfield, and then came up with the game-clinching sack after Hollidaysburg had reached the Oil City 43-yard line with six seconds to play.
