Oil City YMCA Helps Residents Get Free Memberships through Insurance Plans

| September 29, 2020

OIL CITY, Pa. – Many health insurance companies are offering gym membership incentives or fully paid gym memberships through insurance plans and the Oil City YMCA is able to help you get your membership, often at no cost.

Insurance companies like Aetna Better Health and Medicare are finding gym partnerships to be a win-win when their members lead a healthier lifestyle.

“It is worth it to find out if your insurance will cover all or part of your gym membership,” said Lisa Roess, Membership Coordinator for the Oil City YMCA. “We have hundreds of members that get their memberships at no cost through their insurance company.”

Aetna Better Health is just one company that provides YMCA memberships at no cost to members. Memberships may be provided to adults and children if Aetna Better Health is their primary health insurance company.

Many adults also may be eligible for the SilverSneakers® program through your Highmark or Medicare plan or supplement. SilverSneakers is a nationwide health program for senior citizens that provides a free gym membership and wellness counseling at participating YMCAs to more than 1 million enrolled members.  The YMCA can check your eligibility.

Silver&Fit is another program that provides free memberships for adults. UPMC for Life and Aetna are just a few of the insurers that provide Silver&Fit memberships free to their members.  The YMCA can check your eligibility.

Active&Fit is the newest program for people ages 18 to 64. People qualify for these benefits through their health insurance and can visit the Y or call their health plan to learn if they are eligible.

More insurance companies are catching on to the benefits and when changing plans, look for fitness benefits, which could save you up to $636 a year.  A brand new insurance program for fitness benefits will roll out in January 2021, bringing more benefits to local people.

Katie Roth, Wellness Director, is excited about what these health insurance programs mean for Venango County.

“These programs offer opportunities for more people to become YMCA members and be healthier than they’ve ever been,” she said. “Once you become a member through an insurance plan, you have full privileges at the Y. And don’t forget to enroll in the Ys free program called Smart Start that will help you be successful.”

Those who qualify for Active&Fit will receive a free membership. Silver&Fit & SilverSneakers participants will be able to take advantage of a free membership and participate in all senior-designated land and water classes at no charge.

Current senior classes, such as Silver Classic, Silver Circuit, and Silver Splash are offered free to eligible seniors along with full facility use.

Roth added that the Y’s senior program includes more than just fitness.

“We hold weekly and monthly social activities, including game days and luncheons, to increase social interactions,” she said. “We hope Venango County residents will take advantage of the great opportunity to live healthier lives and become more active.”

The competition between health care companies will provide more opportunities for Venango County residents to enjoy the benefits of a free membership at the Oil City YMCA. Stop by the YMCA with your insurance cards today to see if you qualify.
