One Dead After Pickup Rear-Ends Horse & Buggy in Wilmington Township

WILMINGTON TWP., Pa. (EYT) – A 77-year-old man was killed after his horse & buggy was struck from behind in Wilmington Township on Saturday evening.

According to Mercer-based State Police, this accident happened around 5:37 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, on New Castle Mercer Road, in Wilmington Township, Mercer County.

Police say a 2016 Ford F-150 XLT pickup driven by 29-year-old Michael W. Coiro, of New Castle, was traveling south when it rear-ended a horse & buggy operated by 77-year-old Daniel N. Miller, of New Wilmington.

After impact, Miller was ejected from the buggy and landed in a field. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coiro and a passenger—28-year-old Tara R. Macri, of New Castle—were not injured. Neither occupant was using a seat belt.

Coiro’s vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage, while the horse & buggy underwent major damage.

PSP Mercer were assisted on the scene by PSP Butler CARS Unit, Noga EMS, New Wilmington Volunteer Fire Department, Mercer County Department of Public Safety, and the Mercer County District Attorney’s Office.

This investigation is ongoing.
