Robert Raymond Rhoades

Robert Raymond Rhoades, 80, of Titusville, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at 6:45 a.m., Sunday, October 27, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. Rhoades was born in Nanty-Glo on November 22, 1932 a son of the late Paul Rhoades and Elizabeth Bond Rhoades. He graduated from Nanty-Glo High School in 1950.

He entered the U.S. Army September 5, 1950 in Johnstown. Bob served during the Korean Era with the Second Army in Germany as a tank operator and later as a company cook. He was honorably discharged July 16, 1952 at Ft. George G. Meade Maryland with the rank of corporal.

Bob received a Bachelors of Science degree from Indiana State Teachers College and a Master of Letters in Geography degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

An educator for over 42 years, Bob taught at Turkeyfoot Valley High School and Blairsville High School before joining the staff at Titusville High School as a social studies and driver education teacher for 36 years. He was also a justice of the peace in Titusville.

Active in government and devoted to community service, Bob served as Mayor of Titusville, Deputy Mayor, city councilman, and was a member of the Republican State Committee. In addition, he served on the Leisure Services Board, the Titusville Shade Tree Commission, and as a Boy Scout and playground leader.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, VFW Post 5958 and American Legion Post 368. Bob was a member and past president of the Oil Valley Region, Antique Automobile Club of America. An antique and classic car enthusiast, he owned a Model A. Ford and Model T Ford in addition to a 1957 Dodge Royal Lancer, and served as a judge at many competitions. He was also a member of the Florida Flywheelers Engine Club.

Bob married the love of his life for 59 years Emma Romayne Learn Rhoades in Belsano on October 9, 1954. Together they enjoyed travel and sending time with family and friends. Among the many places they visited were England, Wales, France, Hawaii, Florida and Arizona.

In addition to his wife, Bob is survives by four children, Karen Vinopal and her husband Michael of Pleasantville, Ronda Schroeck and her husband Robert of Erie, Rob Rhoades of Oviedo, FL and Robin Rhoades of Charles Town, West Virginia; five grandchildren, Ashley Vinopal of Arlington, VA, Michael Vinopal of Pleasantville, Bradley Schroeck of Erie, Jessica Schroeck of Erie and Jasmine Rhoades of Oviedo, FL; two brothers, David Rhoades and his wife Shirley of State College and Alfred Rhoades and his wife Kathryn of Nanty-Glo; a sister Donna McCutcheon of Mechanicsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Jack and Vernon Rhoades and three sisters Verelda Dugan, Elizabeth Grove and Delores Zamboni.

Relatives and friends of Mr. Rhoades will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Leo N. Hennes Funeral Home, Inc. 203 E. Main St., Titusville, PA 16354. Visitation will continue Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 995 Second St., Nanty-Glo, PA.. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. with Pastor Geno Bartletti, officiating. Burial will be in EUB Cemetery in Belsano.
