FRANKLIN, Pa. (EYT) — The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal has ruled a Franklin house fire accidental.

The PSP Fire Marshal Unit on June 16, 2020, was requested to investigate a structure fire that occurred at 8:25 a.m. on June 16 at a residence located in the 100 block of Liberty Street, Franklin, Venango County.

Upon investigating the fire, it was determined that the fire was an accidental fire, electrical in nature.

The victims are a 38-year-old man and a 30-year-old man, both of Franklin.

The investigation is closed.

PSP reminds all homeowners that electrical failure or malfunctions account for almost 34,000 home fires per year, on average. These fires result in roughly 440 deaths and over $1 billions in direct property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

This is particularly applicable to homes built before the 1950’s. However, even newer homes are at a risk for an electrical fire.

Common causes for electrical fires are:

– Incorrectly installed wiring;
– Overloaded circuits and extension cords;
– Defective or improper plugs, switches, and outlets; and
– Misuse and poor maintenance of lighting.

If any of the following are present in your home, contact an electrician to insure there are no electrical hazards in your property:

– Flickering or dimming lights;
– Switches or outlets that are to to touch and/or emit an acrid odor;
– Discolored cords, outlets, and switch plates; and
– Repeatedly blown fuses and tripped circuit breakers.

Homeowners and renters are encouraged to acquire insurance for their property and belongings to insure their personal effects can be replaced in case of a fire or other total loss.
