Suzette Nellis Memorial Work Nearing Completion

| September 30, 2023

OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) – Work is nearly complete on the Suzette Nellis memorial located along the bike path between Osbourne and Mineral Street in Oil City.

The memorial, funded by a GoFundMe campaign organized by the Nellis Family, is designed as a “memorial spot with a positive message to spread kindness, like she did,” according to the campaign.

The campaign also raised money to purchase security cameras to be placed along the trail.

According to City Manager Mark Schroyer, the cameras have been purchased and received, and are awaiting installation.

The memorial features a large stamped concrete pad in the shape of a teardrop with flower beds and large decorative stones alongside the river. A bench facing the river offers a spot for travelers to sit, relax, and meditate. It bears an inscription on the backrest that says:

Remembering Suzette Nellis
Wife—Mother—Grandmother
Friend to All
“A Life Well Lived”

The pad is surrounded by gravel and newly planted trees.

“It’s a beautiful place,” said Amy Still, Nellis’ daughter. “I have my morning coffee there every time I’m home.”

Still repeatedly told the community following her mother’s death that she would want people to continue to enjoy the bike path.

Seventy-five-year-old Marcy Suzette Nellis, of Oil City, was found dead near the site of the memorial on March 27 after disappearing from the bike trail the day before. Her death was ruled a homicide.

An avid walker, Nellis used the trail daily.
