Traffic Stop Leads to Seizure of Marijuana, THC Vape Cartridges

SUGARCREEK BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) — A traffic stop in Sugarcreek Borough led to the seizure of a large quantity of marijuana and THC vape cartridges late last week.

Court documents indicate the Sugarcreek Borough Police Department filed criminal charges against 18-year-old Ashton Jeremiah Sloss, of Franklin.

According to a criminal complaint, around 10:00 a.m. on July 29, Sugarcreek Borough Police initiated a traffic stop on a dark blue Nissan Pathfinder on State Route 8 that was traveling at approximately 66.8 miles per hour in a posted 45 mile per hour zone.

During the stop, police noted a strong odor of raw marijuana inside the vehicle. It was also observed that the driver, identified as Ashton Sloss had bloodshot, watery eyes, and shaky hands, the complaint states.

He was subsequently asked to undergo field sobriety testing.

According to the complaint, he showed several indicators of impairment during the tests and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. His vehicle was secured pending a search warrant to recover items that had been observed in plain view, including what appeared to be loose marijuana and a plastic baggie nearby.

A later search of the vehicle recovered loose marijuana, a digital scale, rolling papers, a ziplock baggie with 33.7 grams of marijuana, multiple smaller bags of marijuana, a Xanax pill, empty bags with traces of marijuana, a box containing five smaller white boxes that each held 100 THC cartridge assemblies, a box containing 524 HTC vape cartridge boxes empty for assembly, isopropyl alcohol, wax paper, gloves, an infrared thermometer, and a THC vape cartridge filling machine with THC residue, as well as $695.00 cash, according to the complaint.

Sloss was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Matthew T. Kirtland at 10:52 a.m. on July 30 on the following charges:

– Manufacture, Delivery, or Possession With Intent to Manufacture or Deliver, Felony (two counts)
– DUI: Controlled Substance — Impaired Ability — 1st Offense, Misdemeanor
– Possession of Controlled Substance, Misdemeanor
– Use/Possession Of Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor
– Deliver/Intent To Deliver Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor
– Exceed Max Speed Limit Established By 21 MPH, Summary
– Reckless Driving, Summary

He is currently free on $15,000.00 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on August 11 with Judge Kirtland presiding.
