ERIE, Pa. – A former resident of Cochranton pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of Hobbs Act robbery and using and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence, United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung announced Tuesday.

Jack Elijah Turner, 23, pleaded guilty to two counts before United States District Judge Susan Paradise Baxter.

In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that on August 11, 2019, Turner robbed a Kwik Fill gas station at 3360 West 38th Street in Erie at gunpoint.

Judge Baxter scheduled sentencing for June 10, 2022. The law provides for a total sentence of life in prison, a fine of $500,000, or both. Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Millcreek Police Department conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Turner.

Just one day prior to the Kwik Fill robbery, Turner shot and killed both his stepmother, 49-year-old Shannon Whitman, and his 10-year-old half brother, Darrin Whitman, at their home.

He was on the run at the time of the double homicide and later admitted to committing the crime.

Turner was sentenced to serve a 45 to 90 years in prison after pleading guilty to third degree murder in 2019.
