CLINTON TWP., Pa. (EYT) — Police say a vehicle was struck on the side of the road while it was out of fuel on Interstate 80.

According to Franklin-based State Police, the crash occurred around 10:59 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3, along Interstate 80, near mile marker 33.5, in Clinton Township, Venango County.

Police say a 2005 Volvo VNL400 driven by 72-year-old Ereus A. Rocha, of Astoria, New York, was traveling west on I-80 in the right lane when he was unable to maintain his lane of travel and struck a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe operated by 39-year-old Darren J. Nixon, of San Diego, California, along the right shoulder of the highway.

Nixon’s vehicle was parked along the right shoulder of the roadway, beyond the fog line with its hazard lights activated as it was out of fuel, police say.

The impact caused Rocha to lose control of the vehicle and travel off the highway, losing its load, and striking a tree.

Both vehicles sustained disabling damage and were towed from the scene.

Rocha was not injured; he was using a seat belt.

Nixon and three passengers, a 10-year-old female, an 8-year-old female, and a 6-year-old female, escaped the crash without injuries.

According to police, Rocha was charged with a traffic violation.

Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department and Hovis Auto and Truck repair assisted at the scene.
